Samenvatting

In this paper a city is assumed to have a regular system of major roads in a given number of directions. Analysis of journey times shows that travel time on major roads can be approximated by a linear function of the length of major road per unit area. As a consequence relationships between the number of road directions and the two quantities below are derived (1) travel time per kilometre and (2) total vehicle distance travelled per unit area.
