Although the downward tendency in the countries that make up the EU 25 inspires optimism, it must not be forgotten that the number of accidents continues to grow year after year. In this presentation, the demerit point system, which was recently put into practice in Spain, will be presented as an alternative solution to an unacceptably high statistic of accidents and deaths on the road, where Spain holds an uncomfortable position in the ranking of lack of traffic safety. Even when the system has received an initial acceptance by the majority, its implantation has not been free of criticism. It is thought think that this communication may be particularly interesting for those communities and/or states who are studying the possible application of this measure, as well as for those who have already put it into practice and whose knowledge of other experiences may help to improve the system and make it comparable.
