SPARK IGNITION AUTOMOTIVE FUELS: POTENTIAL AND PROBLEMS OF SOME OXYGENATED EXTENDERS.

Samenvatting

This review covers alcohols and some other oxygenates as spark ignition engine fuels of likely interest in the near future, particularly with the worldwide phasedown in lead additives. Indication is given of their costs and benefits, especially from the exhaust and greenhouse emissions standpoint. Implementation procedures and changes in associated safety risks are identified where appropriate. It is concluded that whilst there are niche markets for several of these alternative fuels, there is no evidence that their benefits are so large that they cannot be achieved by modification to the future vehicle oil refinery system.
