This report documents a project describing the ongoing activities of various railway administrations concerning the utilisation of asphalt in trackbed construction. During the last 50 years, a variety of experiments and tests on asphalt in trackbed have been conducted by railway administrations. Initially, these were not well coordinated and documentation from the early period is very deficient. However, activities in this area have increased during the last 10-20 years. However, it should be emphasised that an asphalt track is still at the experimental stage, which means that experience and results from tests must be interpreted with some caution. Nevertheless, there is much to indicate that these types of trackbed may be a competitive choice compared with today's conventional track designs. Therefore, further work on developing the concept of asphalt trackbeds is desirable.
