The principal objective of Workpackage 24 of DRIVE II Project 2002 is to investigate the use of ATT (Advanced Traffic Telematics) for modifying geometric road design standards and operational regulations on both new and existing roads. This report describes the identifications and evaluation of the ATT functions which have the greatest potential to improve the safety and level of service on existing roads. Following a detailed investigation consisting of a literature review and case studies on roads in Ireland and Sweden, the following three ATT functions were selected: (1) speed control; (2) overtaking assistance; and (3) headway control. The potential impacts of these ATT functions on the traffic behaviour were next evaluated. Each function was examined by incorporating it into an existing road scenario based on an extensively validated two-way traffic simulation model. Safety and operation evaluations were then carried out using the results of simulation tests.
