Samenvatting

The need for safe highways seems obvious enough. However, when it comes to putting highway safety solutions on paper--and ultimately on the road--the challenge is enormous, given the diverse topography, weather, roadway speed limits, and construction materials in the U.S. With the right tools and training though, knowledgeable highway safety and transportation professionals can handle the diverse variables and implement measures that save lives. Recent efforts by safety professionals at the Federal Highway Administration have sounded the call for renewed awareness of the value of highway safety education and workforce development by producing a new software tool for safety engineers and transportation professionals, and by launching a new training course entitled "Fundamentals of Highway Safety Improvement." These efforts are described herein.
