Samenvatting

A linearized mathematical model was developed to simulate the lateral dynamics of a simply-articulated vehicle in the five degrees-of-freedom of tractor lateral velocity and turn-rate. Aerodynamic forces due to cross-winds were also included in the model. Computer programs were developed to determine root loci for fifty-seven parameters in the model and to calculate the dynamic response of the vehicle to cross-winds. Using two sets of data car-trailer combinations as well as tractor-trailer combinations were studied. In the car-trailer case, the trailer roll parameters were found to have a significant effect on stability. In analysing the gust response, it was found that the response was larger with the roll freedom included.
