Samenvatting

The paper attempts to review the current state of the art in cross-sectional surveys for transportation planning and decision making. Two primary types of surveys are discussed - observational and participatory surveys - and an attempt is made to characterise the current state of practice and state of the art for both. The review cannot be exhaustive, because there is a major deficiency in documentation of surveys, except as a communication between consultant and client. The paper is also directed primarily to the state of the art as it appears in the united states. It must be recognised that there are differences, therefore, between the state of the art and state of practice described herein and what may pertain in some other countries, which may be either more or less advanced in this technology.
