This survey was conducted within the framework of the ESTEEM project, European Scenarios on Transport-Energy-Environment for Metropolitan Areas, of the European Commission DG XII. The purpose of ESTEEM is to adjust and validate an integrated chain of models of the interactions between land-use, transport and environment, and to apply it to four large European cities: Rome, Lyon, London and Brussels. The stated preference survey conducted in Brussels bears on two themes: on the one hand, modal choices for working people, for home-to-work journeys; on the other, households' residential location choices. The paper focuses on the analysis of households' behaviour, regarding their residential location. The survey notably aims to investigate the influence of home-work accessibility on the households' location choices, and to estimate the trade-offs between home-work travel time, neighbourhood type and housing price. A similar stated preference survey on residential location choice has been conducted in Lyon. The comparison of both surveys results reveals significant differences in the perception of neighbourhoods by Brussels' and Lyon's households.
