Beginning with the third quarter of 2008, NHTSA began making quarterly projections of motor vehicle traffic fatalities. The latest such projection was made by NHTSA recently (DOT HS 811 403, September 2010) and showed that fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes during the first six months (January through June) of 2010 are projected to decline by about 9.2 percent as compared to the same time period in 2009. The estimated month-to-month fatality counts for 2010 and reported FARS fatalities from January through June during 2008 and 2009 are depicted in Figure 1. This Research Note details the underlying data and the statistical methodology that was used to estimate fatalities during the first half of 2010. This methodology and data will be used to make future estimates and will be continuously evaluated to make refinements to the estimation process. (Author/publisher)
