Data relating to the column behavior of forty-one (41) vehicles - 1975 through 1977 year models - when subjected to a 30 mph barrier impact were obtained from the FMVSS No. 204 compliance test reports. Test films and associated data were analyzed to identify typical response patterns of steering assemblies. There seemed to be no typical response pattern. Maximum and minimum total vertical displacement was ten (10) inches and less than one (1) inch, respectively, Maximum and minimum horizontal rearward displacement was just under five (5) inches and less than a half (1/2), respectively. The average maximum intrusion of the steering column into the passenger compartment was four (4) inches. (Portions of this document are not fully legible).
