Which? started its car safety rating system in 1983 and was involved in establishing the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) in 1996. Improvements in safety between Vauxhall's new Corsa compared with it's predecessor, the Nova, are outlined. Manufacturers are trying to combine their primary (accident avoidance) and secondary (crash prevention) safety systems. Common weaknesses still found in safety design are discussed. These include seat belt buckles, front-seat release systems, poor Isofix child-seat anchorage fittings, and hard knee impact area. A timeline is presented of key safety milestones from 1958 to 2005. Tables of Which? safety ratings and Euro NCAP occupant safety ratings are provided for off-roaders, convertibles, mini MPVs, medium cars, luxury cars, large cars, superminis and MPVs.
