Samenvatting

This article describes the integrated system being developed by the company Serco for management and operation of quality bus corridors (QBC) in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The Bus Information and Signalling (BIAS) system brings together a range of components including urban traffic management and control, automatic public transport vehicle location, bus fleet management and real-time passenger information. The aim of the QBC strategy is to make public transport an attractive and realistic alternative to the car within Glasgow. BIAS will secure public transport priority at signals, maintain bus headways, ensure efficient signal control, provide high quality traveller and operator information, and evaluate and preserve benefits. Travel information, linked with local and national radio, provides real-time and easy-to-use information and the ability to pay for travel in advance. A common database system integrates the different applications and is designed to be flexible and scaleable, with the human interface presented as a series of linked web pages including a map.
