Reinforced soil structures may be cost-effective alternatives to cast-in-place concrete walls. Reinforced soil walls offer significant technical advantage over conventional concrete retaining walls. Experiences from Norway indicate cost savings in the order of 30-50 per cent compared with concrete retaining walls. Time of construction is shorter than for concrete walls. Precast concrete elements for facing are mostly used in Norway. Three types of reinforcement are used: geotextile, geogrid, and steel strips. A reinforced earth wall with height 12 m is instrumented. Recorded stress on deformation data are discussed. (A)
