Die Publikation soll als Planungshandbuch für den Fahrradverkehr verstanden werden. Ausgangspunkt ist dabei das Fahrrad als eigenständiges effizientes und umweltfreundliches Verkehrsmittel, dem in der Gesamtverkehrsplanung und der Strassenplanung der entsprechende Raum gegeben werden muss. In einzelnen Kapiteln wird auf das Fahrrad im Verkehrssystem, auf Voraussetzungen für eine erfolgreiche Planung des Radverkehrs, auf Wege zur fahrradfreundlichen Gemeinde, auf Massnahmen, damit Strassen für alle Verkehrsteilnehmer attraktiv sind, auf die Gestaltung von Verkehrswegen und Kreuzungen für Radfahrer, auf die Planung von Schnittstellen zwischen Fahrrad und öffentlichem Verkehr, auf strassenbauliche Details von Fahrbahnen und Radwegen sowie auf rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen für den Fahrradverkehr in Österreich eingegangen. (KfV/H) English abstract: Bicycles as a means of transport are steadily catching on - but traffic planning is not doing justice to this trend. The law and the planners currently treat cyclists as "pedestrians on wheels" rather than fully fledged drivers of vehicles. This puts cycling at a disadvantage and can make it unattractive and dangerous, particularly in towns. This handbook, "Roads for cycling", develops one's comprehension of cyclists' specific needs and the characteristics of the bicycle as a means of transport. This book contains recommendations on any number of topics relevant to cycling: from the legal situation of the cyclist, via ways to organise road junctions, lanes or cycle parking facilities, all the way to laying out the classical cycle track with suitable signposting. "Roads for cycling" not only encourages experienced weekday cyclists, but is also required reading for everyone involved in day-to-day decision-making affecting cycling, in planning and politics. (A)
