Samenvatting

Ratepayers expect and are currently generally receiving satisfactory levels of service for their infrastructure road assets and are unlikely to accept any lowering of these standards or any dramatic cost increases in the future; but is this situation sustainable? To maintain road assets in a satisfactory condition and to extend its economic life it is essential formal asset management practices are adopted and developed so that sufficient funds to maximise infrastructure utilisation and functionality are available when required. This paper explores issues associated with developing strategic directions within an asset management system and will consider a simple application to determine local road network sustainability. Particular emphasis will be given between parameters of information fundamentally available for long-term strategic purposes but normally collected for short term tactical purposes.
