Reinforced concrete bridges, culverts and pavements are a major part of the highway network in the U.S.A. and around the world. SHRP has completed a series of studies into the deterioration problems associated with reinforced concrete and has produced a series of guides and manuals for highway engineers. The research includes five major studies on the corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete caused by salt ingress. These studies cover nondestructive testing, cathodic protection, chloride removal, physical and chemical rehabilitation methods and the development of an overall rehabilitation methodology for corrosion damaged structures. This paper summarises the research and highlights some of the most important products of SHRP's research on concrete and structures, showing how they can benefit the highway community in the U.S.A. and around the world.
