In several European countries policies are being implemented to reduce growing car use. Sometimes in vain, sometimes with success. In the European Commission (EC) `Designs to Avoid the Need to Travel in Europe' (DANTE) research project an assessment is made on the impact of these strategies and whether successful strategies are transferable to other countries. This paper gives an overview of the implementation rate of various types of measures in Denmark, Greece, Italy, Rumania, United Kingdom, and The Netherlands. The main empirical part of the DANTE project is based on a synthesis of the policies to reduce the need to travel in 7 cities and a corridor. As an example of the case study findings the paper discusses some measures implemented to increase bicycle use in these cities, and some experiences with park-and-ride-schemes. (A)
