A strategy for reducing wet-pavement accidents in Illinois.

Samenvatting

In Illinois a disproportionate number of wet-weather accidents are associated mostly with road sites where a driver's maneuver demand exceeds the available pavement friction. 59 % of 226 of such sites had a friction level FN below 30, while only 7 % exceeded an FN of 36. A long term strategy involves upgrading and prolonging friction characteristics in new as well as in existing pavements by improvement of surface texture. Sometimes, driver demand can be lowered instead.
