Samenvatting

A high speed measurement system is now in limited commercial use for determining illuminance performance but no system exists for determining luminance performance for main road lighting where the light reflected from the carriageway is the determining factor. Illuminance performance is ideal for use in managing electrical contractors maintaining street lights but where a performance contract requires a head contractor to provide lighting to any of the AS/NZS1158 V categories for main roads, then economies may be possible after considering actual road surface reflective properties. The company is currently working with a FORST funded masters student to extend its existing system to cover main road luminance based assessment. It will incorporate road surface reflectivity measurements in the analysis and this paper provides details of progress towards commercial use of the extended system.
