Samenvatting

Loading tests on an experimental orthotropic bridge deck panel with v-stiffeners and surfaced with 38 mm of hand laid mastic asphalt are described. A 2-axle vehicle was driven across the panel at speeds up to 30 km/h repeated at intervals over a 12 month period during which the surfacing temperature ranged between 4 degrees c and 43 degrees c. Stresses were measured along a v-stiffener, in the side of the stiffener, in the deckplate and in a crossbeam. Typical influence lines for a specific temperature and speed are shown for each location. Tables list the peak stresses, measured under a single wheel load of 20 km, for the whole range of speeds and temperatures and, for comparison, static stresses measured in a similar (but unsurfaced) panel are included. Curves are shown relating the dynamic (2.5 km/h) and static surface stresses over the whole temperature range whilst a table summarizes the relationship at a typical temperature of 14 degrees c. Data are also given to show that (a) there was no bond between the surfacing and the deckplate and (b) due to the presence of creep, static stresses could not be measured. (Author/publisher).
