The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) was established as a separate administration within the United States (U.S.) Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000, pursuant to the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999. The primary mission of FMCSA is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. FMCSA is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and employs more than 1,000 people in all 50 States all dedicated to improving the safety of highways in the U.S. The FMCSA provides safety regulatory oversight of large trucks, commercial buses, and for-hire operators of small passenger-carrying vehicles that engage in interstate commerce. A large truck is defined as a truck with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 10,000 pounds. Commercial buses are those that are designed and used to transport 15 or more passengers. Motor carriers engaged in the transportation of hazardous materials are also regulated by FMCSA. This paper will primarily focus on presenting many of FMCSA's analysis, research, and technology (ART) programs dedicated to the mission of saving lives. (A).
