Samenvatting

The Netherlands Transport Research Centre (AVV) of the Department of Public Works commissioned the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research to carry out a study. The intention of the study was to determine the influence of various characteristics of both cycle lanes and cue lanes on road hazard. The main theme was to determine: (1) the influence of lane width on both moped riders and on cyclists; and (2) the remaining road width on motor vehicles. The first phase consisted of an exploration into the feasibility of the study. It was decided to approach those municipalities which have many cycle lanes. 49 municipalities were requested to cooperate with the study. However, 21 municipalities responded. Only five municipalities proved to have intensity data on both cyclists and on moped riders available. It was concluded that it would be impossible to continue the originally envisaged study. The paper recommends the development of a database for a future study into the road hazard experienced by cyclists. This database should contain basic information about slow traffic including intensities.
