The paper reviews the origins of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP and its counterpart, the Canadian Highway Research Program (C-SHRP). It also describes the development of the SHRP plan for Structures research, the execution of the plan, and the products and reports which were produced. The main subject areas included the testing and evaluation of concrete bridges, cathodic protection, electrochemical removal, physical and chemical methods of rehabilitation, and a decision model for rehabilitating corrosion-damaged bridges. The corresponding activities of the Structures research program of C-SHRP are also reviewed. Contracts were awarded for research into the service life of rehabilitation methods, life of rehabilitation methods, repairs using shotcrete, and the effectiveness of epoxy-coated reinforcing steel. The paper concludes by examining the implementation activities planned for SHRP and C-SHRP. (A)
