A structural outline of highway registration at the Rijkswaterstaat is discussed. Different systems which give information required for the policy, planning, construction, administration and maintenance of highways are mentioned. The results of an evaluation of the problems and needs in the field of highway registration at the Rijkswaterstaat are presented. The increasing use of automation makes it technically possible to develop an integrated highway information system by means of which organisational aspects can be included. Recommendations for a future structure for highway registration by which it is possible to provide adequately for information requirements in the field of highways and traffic, are presented.
