Samenvatting

This report documents and presents the results of a study that synthesizes available knowledge relevant to the adverse safety effects of pavement wear and pavement marking wear attributable to studded tires, assesses qualitatively the importance of the effects that were judged likely to be of consequence, and outlines research that could assist in quantifying these effects. Tire hydroplaning and wet skid fostered by water retained in channels cut in pavements by studded tires, splash and spray from these same channels, and the hazards of maintenance needed to restore stud-damaged surfaces exemplify the kinds of effects that were considered.
