Samenvatting

This report illustrates some of the operations of a major urban bus operator in the third world. The Delhi transport corporation (DTC) has control of over 3000 buses serving a population in excess of 5 million. It is estimated that over 2.8 million passengers are carried daily on DTC services. The report gives some of the general performance characteristics of the DTC. detailed observations made on six routes are also recorded and the surveys employed are also described. A simple cost-model is developed to show how route costs can be estimated. These studies were undertaken as part of the joint research programme on urban public transport carried out by the Indian association of state road transport undertakings (ASRTU) and the transport and road research laboratory (TRRL).
