Samenvatting

Questionnaires requesting information on bicycle equipment and cycling experience during 1979, including any serious accidents, were distributed among adult cyclists in Christchurch and Palmerston north. From the responses it was possible to calculate mean annual distances cycled on various types of roads and cycle facilities. An overall accident rate was derived, and relative accident rates were determined for the different facilities and for night riding. Accidents were also tabulated by object hit, time of day, and contributory factors. Comparisons were made with a similar survey carried out in the us. It was also possible to compare the cycle accident rate with that for other transport modes in New Zealand. (author/publisher)
