Samenvatting

Drivers have to operate vehicle functions with increased concern for safety while driving, because the number and complexity of functions in the vehicle will be increasing with intelligent transportation systems (ITS) advancements. Human Machine Interface (HMI) system for the vehicle should increase the attention while driving. This paper proposes a pointing device which is easily to control, even if the number and complexity of functions in the vehicle are increased. Moreover, in order to decrease visual loads and to improve operability, the authors studied a system combining voice guidance with a pointing device. A simulator was created to experimentally confirm visual loads and operability. After examining the results of their testing, an effective HMI is suggested as a new system to improved driving safety.
