Samenvatting

Unnecessary engine idling of the vehicle in stop causes not only air pollution and traffic noise dispersion which are consequently linked to the environmental pollution of the earth, but also fuel consumption wastefully. According to the survey report of the Tokyo Metropolitan Environment Research Center, reduction of exhaust fumes by stop of engine idling of vehicle in stop is estimated about 20% on average in the vicinity of the chronically jammed intersections. However, the comparatively short time engine stop during the traffic signal waiting is not always effective. In addition, reduction of traffic passing quantity due to the starting delay at the engine restarting and increase of the driver's burden are guessed to arise. This paper describes the characteristics of the exhaust fumes at engine restarting and indicates the effectiveness of the engine stop during traffic signal waiting. Then IISS (Intelligent Idling Stop System) that minimizes generation of exhaust fumes and suppresses fuel consumption without causing reduction of traffic passing quantity is proposed.
