The objective of the study was to ree whether to icientifi-cation, classification and recording of traffic conflictscould be adeduately carried out by the type o pc-rsonreltypically eL,ployed by 1oca1 authorities as temporary traf-fic enumerators. There was no significant differencesbetween orale and female observers, or between drivers andnon-drivers. The theory of signal detection was appliedto the data obtained and the benefit of selectivelyeliminating various percentages of observers was exanined,
