Samenvatting

This paper deals with the effects of fuel substitution by hydrogen in the premixed state with intake air on the performance and particulate emission characteristics in IDI diesel engines. Hydrogen, which has excellent combustibility, is well-known as the clean fuel. On the other hand, so far as the engine is concerned, the primary question regarding hydrogen is the pre-ignition or knock. So it is apparent that when the diesel fuel is burned with hydrogen in diesel combustion chamber, hydrogen affects the combustion process of diesel fuel. The mixture in the engine cylinder was ignited with a pilot injection of diesel fuel, and then emission characteristics were checked. From the experimental results, it was found that a hydrogen-premixed IDI diesel engine could be operated in the state of lower particulate emission. Although the fuel economy was aggravated slightly, the particulate emission was reduced remarkably with the optimum supply of hydrogen comparing with the conventional diesel engine operation. (A)
