Samenvatting

The results of this study indicate that in fairly thick fog on a motorway many drivers are unable to gauge the distance away of the vehicle in front of them and their own speed; they do not allow sufficient spacing to be able to stop when the vehicle in front of stops suddenly. Observations made on another night when the visibility was good and speeds were higher, again showed that drivers did not allow sufficient spacing to avoid a collision with the vehicle ahead if it stopped suddenly.
