Samenvatting

The road system in Wallonia is an essential major road link at the heart of Europe. To attract more traffic (not just in commercial terms, but alsowith reference to culture and to travel), the Belgian State, and subsequently Walloon Region, has established a very dense network of motorways. The cost of maintaining optimal conditions of mobility can vary in an extremely random fashion. In recent winters, which can be described as mild or average, the costs generated have varied a great deal. The current paper discusses the resources, in terms of equipment, software and personnel, available for tacking this problem. A quite simple method is emerging as a tool for making the districts aware of the situation. The disparities betweenthe costs of different private companies are lessening from year to year, and the quantities of salt spread are being reduced without affecting theresults obtained. All local managers who receive an unfavourable report are taking original measures on their own initiative to correct their practices. For the covering abstract see ITRD E143097.
