Samenvatting

This paper describes WiseCrax(r) which is a method of automated distress analysis developed by Roadware Corporation that employs digital, non-interlaced video cameras to record high quality pavement video images. The process is divided into three separate steps: data acquisition; crack detection; and crack classification (alligator or fatigue, block, longitudinal, etc.). This modular approach provides a high degree of flexibility to accommodate changes and improvements in new hardware and software. It also allows WiseCrax to be used with a wide range of classification schemes including the Universal Crack Indicator (UCI) protocol developed by the World Bank. The technology was tested in several FHWA sponsored tests in the past three years. It has now left the laboratory phase and is being implemented in several large infrastructure projects in the United States. Additional enhancements are being planned to improve all stages of the process from better data acquisition to crack classification algorithms based on neural network and artificial intelligence programs developed for the US Defense Industry.
