Samenvatting

In Europe, bus stops and shelters are increasingly being fitted with lighting to enhance safety and security on public transport. Traditionally, they are connected to the mains supply, but alternatives are being examined. Solar photovoltaic panels are becoming popular. They can be fitted to almost any kind of bus shelter. Illumination at night makes the bus stop more noticeable at night and improves passengers' feelings of security. The environmental and financial benefits of using solar photovoltaic panels are discussed. Examples of bus shelters with LEDS and photovoltaic technology in the UK, Germany and France are described. Suppliers include Carmanah, Solar Century, and Tenesol.
