Samenvatting

Chapter III of the 1994 Americal Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) publication A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (Green Book) contains information on a range of geometric design elements. These elements are broadly categorized as being related to sight distance, horizontal alignment, and vertical alignment. Within the category of horizontal alignment, the Green Book identifies two design elements that have a significant effect on alignment design, these elements are: a) distribution of the superelevation rate and side friction factor over the range of candidate curve radii, and b) transition section design. The objective of this research is to evaluate and recommend updates or revisions to the current AASHTO Green Book methods for: a) distributing the superelevation rate and side friction factor, and b) the design of transition sections for horizontal curves. The research will analyze the full spectrum of highway conditions. (Author/publisher)
