Samenvatting

This study was undertaken to evaluate the first aid knowledge and performance of drivers who intervene with injured patients in Turkey. A semi-structured interview consisting of 22 questions was applied to 300 drivers between January-May 1997. First aid kits of the vehicles were examined also. With the help of this semi-structured interview, drivers' knowledge of artificial respiration, cardiac massage, tourniquet application, and transport of injured patients, was evaluated. Drivers' first aid knowledge and performance was found to be inadequate. First aid training should be spread out and compulsory first aid lessons in private driving courses should make use of various dummies. Before getting the driving license, candidates' first aid knowledge may be checked. National and private broadcasting programs for traffic use should be organized more often. Volunteer social and occupational organizations should support this attempt.
