In the spring of 1989, Environics Research Group conducted a survey among a representative sample of 1,003 Ontario's road users such as drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. The specific objective of this research was to establish a baseline measurement of the public's knowledge of safe road use practices. Given legislative changes, improvements in transportation technology and developments in road use techniques, it was critical to obtain an accurate reading of the current level of road use knowledge. Findings from this survey that reveal gaps in knowledge are to feed into remedial public education campaigns and programmes.
