In a consecutive sample of patients over 17 years of age attending for eye examination. A cut off acuity of 0.5 binocularly the numbers of drivers failing to achieve this standard, for various age groups, was determined. The data shows that not all drivers meet current U.K. requirements or, indeed, proposed EEC requirements for corrected binocular visual acuity and that even amongst those achieving the standard with spectacle correction, the correction was not worn routinely in all cases.
