Samenvatting

Building upon recent trends in the transportation community that embrace environmental stewardship, context sensitivity, and a life-cycle approach to engineering and asset management, the concept of “Sustainable Highways” offers a positive and proactive approach to guide the development and delivery of highways and highway-related services. It provides a broad framework that places conservation and community enhancement on the same plane as functionality and efficiency. It is a philosophy that is driven by the need to explore opportunities from an inter-disciplinary perspective in collaboration with stakeholders before converging prematurely on what may be inappropriate or incomplete solutions. It is an approach that fosters the creation of opportunities to provide sustainable outcomes as well as functional solutions that result in highways “better than before” from many different perspectives.
