Transit New Zealand now uses triple bottom line reporting which indicates its positive stance in respect of the economic, social and environmental effects of its activities. The main activities performed on the network include routine maintenance, pavement rehabilitation and surfacing activities. Pavement rehabilitation uses in situ recycling of existing pavement materials, including chip seal surfacing. Long experience in Northland shows that Northland aggregates respond to modification techniques rather than stabilisation processes, meaning less additive is required. Other initiatives include conversion of the highway lighting system to low energy bulbs to reduce power consumption and the use of in situ deep-column soil stabilizing techniques for slip stabilisation and remediation.
