As a major east-west transportation corridor with acces and mobility for private automobiles and transit buses, Carling Avenue in Ottawa provides for the needs of all transportation users, as well as the free movement of goods to the business sector. This rubblization project addressed a major distress mechanism (joint faulting) to increase the smoothness of the road, thereby increasing safety and comfort. Carling Avenue represented the first use of rubblization technology in an urban environment in Ontario. Breaking up the concrete material and reusing it in-situ saved money, fuel, space in the landfill, and eliminated the need for virgin aggregates.
