Samenvatting

The formulation of a transport strategy for Ipswich, with the emphasis on sustainable modes, has led to the identification of area-wide objectives and initiatives to encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport and to improve safety. In Ipswich, a route based approach to the identification, design and implementation of changes to the traffic environment has been adopted. This paper deals with the development of detailed traffic management and control strategies for three of the five major radial routes into the town, combining solutions to local problems with initiatives to complement the overall objectives for the town. Consultation processes and the response of the public and the media are discussed. It compares and contrasts the types of measure to be introduced along each route and the anticipated effects, including the contribution from "Park and Ride" and the traffic management facilities offered by an Urban Traffic Control system. The integration of the guided bus demonstration project in Ipswich with detailed traffic management proposals for an adjacent route is also described. For two of the routes, which have now been largely implemented, experience gained during the detailed design and construction phase, including costs, can be shared. Some early feedback from a traffic monitoring study considering traffic flows, journey time and delay is available.
