Samenvatting

The author presents a paper about the KitteLock electronic driving licence (EDL). The electronic driving licence has a smart-card chip built in and the EDL can replace the ignition key and wheel lock in the car. As unlicenced driving, especially in combination with alcohol is the largest traffic safety problem both in USA and Europe, an EDL would be a very effective tool against drunken driving. In USA more than 10,000 lives were lost in fatal accidents with unlicenced drunk drivers. In addition to preventing unlicenced driving an EDL-system installed in cars with modern electronics will prevent car theft and its consequences. The development of the KitteLock electronic driving licence started in 1993 and since 1994 prototype systems have been successfully tested in SAAB and Volvo cars. (A)
