Samenvatting

A description is given of a pilot project on the Sydney Harbour Bridge which aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of remote electronic identification technology in toll collection. The electronic system operates in parallel with manual and automatic coin collection systems on the three busiest lanes. The Tags for the project use the modulated backscatter principle of operation. Details are given of the Tags and Tag Reader equipment and experience of using the system. The operation of the Toll Booth Computer system is described. The video-based Violation Enforcement System, implemented at the same time, is discussed. Central to this is the JPEG standard compression module which stores 15 seconds of continuous realtime video. In the event of a violation a 15 second sequence is transferred through the system for action by toll office staff.
