Samenvatting

This symposium which highlighted the importance of design standards as a tool in the planning and design of loads and road networks and in influencing social -- economic activities, consisted of 6 sessions: (1) introductory session, (2) models for driver behavior and traffic operation relative to design standards, (3) design elements as related to traffic safety and traffic flow, (4) economic consequences of design standards, (5) interrelation and optimizaiton of road design elements as related to classes of roads, and (6) conclusions and recommendations. The extent to which the prevailing economic trend should influence road resign standards, were discussed, as well as the relationships between traffic safety, traffic flow and road design elements. It was pointed out that statistical methods related to traffic and road design elements was limited. Other aspects covered included the possible link between legal speed limits and design speed, traffic conflict techniques for measuring risk, the uniformity versus flexibility of road design standards, the safety and operational features of wide, 2-way single carriageway roads, and road classification. The covering abstract for the symposium is IRRD abstract no. 219979. Volume I contains the introductory session of the conference. The session on the development of road design standards contained national policy statements from the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. For the English version see p. 59-155. Volume II contains the full texts of papers for sessions II (Models for driver behaviour and traffic operation relative to design standards) and III (Design elements as related to traffic safety and traffic flow). Volume III contains the full texts of papers for sessions IV (Economic consequences of design standards) and V (Interrelation and optimisation of road design elements as related to classes of roads.)
