This article describes various forms of synthetic products which have been used in civil engineering since the late fifties. These products, which are mainly woven or non woven geotextiles, or composites really contribute to the cost effectiveness of both the design and execution of a project. The chance discovery of an open three dimensional nylon matting by ENKA BV in Holland in 1969 encourage research into applications for this material. Such matting has now established itself as a method of soil reinforcement for both hydraulic and civil engineering projects. It enhances the reinforcement produced by tree and plant roots near the surface of dry slopes and river banks and thereby helps prevent soil erosion or landslips.
