System integration and field tests for developing in-vehicle dilemma zone warning system.

This paper demonstrates the basis of system integration and field test for the assessments of dilemma zone warning system. The system consists of hardware including in-vehicle warning device, roadside antenna, and traffic signal controller and software to operate and test the integrated system through communication systems. Field test were fulfilled under the real traffic situations in order to test the system in terms of warning initiation time from the signal controller, the activation and duration of visual and audible signal, and warning delay based on the relationships between distance variables including safe stopping distance and the location of roadside antenna. Findings from the field test at the two sites of signalized intersections indicated that the system would be implemented in eliminating the dilemma zone relative to approach speeds and in reducing red light violation and intersection collision through the in-vehicle warning device at signalized intersection.
