From October 1999 till October 2000 a trial is being conducted with twenty passenger cars and one city-bus equipped with an Intelligent Speed Adaptation system (ISA). The ISA system permanently monitors the speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle reaches the local speed limit, the fuel inlet is automatically restricted. Three speed limits, 30 km/h, 50km/h and 80 km/h are used. The trial takes place in the city of Tilburg. The primary goal of this field study is to examine whether ISA is a realistic option as an instrument for controlling speed. By collecting and analysing data through questionnaires, automatic data loggers and note books for test drivers, a broad perspective of the technical and social feasiblity of ISA can be obtained. The evaluation research also focuses on the technical functioning of the system, and on the effects of ISA on user acceptance and driving behaviour. Final results are expected in January 2001.
